Fastest Hands in the Lab
pixels placed per second on the Mk. II tensor armsBehind six inches of leaded glass in the Placement Room, the nurses work the tensor placement arms: every pixel is sent up from its Supply Room bin by pneumatic tube, picked up with micro-tweezers and set into the slide, one at a time. Here's who has the quickest hands.

The Supply Room Report
inventory taken across 35 slidesEvery pixel in every slide is drawn from the Supply Room: 16,777,216 labelled bins, one for every color, shelved in 4,096 aisles of similar shades. Stock arrives four ways: freshly lab-grown in culture medium, reclaimed from recycled pictures (the worn-out blacks and whites), filtered out of the air (the greys: smog, the dust of forty star systems and the occasional passing nebula), and melted down from the plastic nobody on Earth will take: bottle caps, cling film, those little clamshell boxes. That's where our brightest colors come from.
